Retrogressive was the works of Lucius Ahcheen (drums), Alex Baillie (lead guitar and vocals), Kaos Fletcher (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Eli Searle (bass, production and visual art). Originally formed in 2022, Retrogressive was an alternative rock band based on the Sunshine Coast, QLD, Australia. Featuring a sound influenced from the metal, grunge and psychedelic scenes in the 90s, the band had a unique style that evolved with every release.
I produced all visual art for Retrogressive, as well as played bass and mixed/mastered the studio releases.
Retrogressive’s first single Incomplete was the first song I properly mixed and mastered, with the whole process being done entirely in Cockos REAPER. The recording was completed in my home studio, with the drums and amps all being fully miked up and recorded individually. Due to the track being recorded multiple times over the span of 2 years, the final mix was a mashup of all 4 recorded demos, with the final vocal take chosen being cut from the first ever demo recording, captured only on a cheap USB microphone.
The album cover for Incomplete was completed using a mix of digital photography and photoshop, mashing up some amateur shots taken in a backyard swimming pool to achieve the final effect.
